Discovering the Good Life

Almost two months have already passed since I completed my undergraduate philosophical studies. As I took the morning walk, the eternal philosophical question popped up. A question about ethics - “what is the good life? I need not appeal to Aristotellian or Kantian treatises to answer such a personal matter. In the simplest possible terms, this question is about “right living.”

Stephen R. Covey, in the "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" has pointed out that most of the inspirational or motivational literature has been rather superficial. It was phony, shallow and superficial in the sense that it focused mostly on the creation of a ‘correct’ social image or reputation, quick fixes or techniques for a successful life. The literature appeared to solve human crises with pain-killers without addressing the core problems.

This became clear with catchy book titles such as ‘10 ways to win friends with a smile,’ ‘techniques for keeping a marriage,’ ‘techniques for acing an exam in a day.’ ‘7 perfect ways to influence people.’ All these approaches simply motivated people to use ‘techniques’ to get people to like them. Rather than focusing on helping people to develop lasting moral principles and a worthwhile way of life.

Caring for the whole self

The first step in becoming a successful human being and a master at right living is by taking care of the four basic dimensions of  human nature.

 Spirit

Contemporary culture does not value or take time to address what the Greek Philosophers termed ‘care for the soul’ as the primal and fundamental duty to the self. This is mainly due to the widespread popularity of atheism, materialism and secularism.

Yet, care for the soul is greatly tried to the concept of transcendence. This is the belief that normal or physical human experience can be surpassed and that beings which are not subject to the limitations of the material universe exist. I personally believe that all things have their source and ultimate end in God. Thus, God guarantees that we shall inevitably find meaning in our lives.

Body

Present-day culture always tries to find quick solutions to the ills of the body. We have progressed in our health care provisions and medical technology. We can treat almost any ailment with pills and surgery. For example, obesity and depression.

However, the basic approach should be on prevention of disease by living a lifestyle which is friendly to the body. For example, eating healthy foods, doing exercises and conducting one’s daily preoccupations in harmony with principles of a healthy lifestyle.

                                                        Mind

The ‘google-mindset’ is a virus which is destroying the minds of young and old people alike. It is the mindset of quick and already-made solutions to the questions and problems of life. It has brutally killed critical and reflective thinking simply because Google has all the answers.
However, with regard to the mind, the best approach is ‘read broadly and deeply and pursue continuous education. One ought to invest into one’s intellect by means of serious study, edification and education. The lazy lifestyle of an uncritical and unreflective human being is an insult to one’s very nature as a ‘zoon logikon’ that is, rational animal.

4.      Heart

Modern culture perceives relationships as a mere means to the attainment of one’s personal, selfish and individualistic happiness. This has led to abuse in relationships.
However, deep and meaningful care of the heart is simply about love and care for the other in their entirety. Meaningful living and loving is based on respectful listening and selfless self-giving. A loving heart brings the greatest fulfillment and joy to the heart of man.

Conclusion
Right Living is a constant struggle.  It is a fight to care for the soul, the body, the mind and the heart. However, it is always a worthwhile battle and always brings beautiful fruits of a good, happy and fulfilled human existence. One ought to avoid the quick techniques and roads to success and instead place one’s effort on becoming a better person daily by means of right choices.

The Miracle of the 'Uncommon Breed.'

STOP!

Stop!

I said stop right now.

Stop sleep walking through your life and start living your dreams!

I don’t know what dreams you got, but its hard changing yourself for it.

The question is:  what did you do to at least reach it or do you just write them down in your journals and diaries and do nothing?

The reason you ask questions like,
“what if this doesn’t work out.”

“what if I don’t pass through this.”

Its all because you have the fear of failure. Fear wants you to run from something that is not after you.

In Pursuit of Happiness

SEARCHING

Jack and Nancy have been married for two years.

One fateful day, Nancy woke up and said to Jack,

“I feel like I can’t continue with this marriage, I need to do something more worthwhile with my life.”

She then continued,

“this is my third marriage and am already giving up.”  She then burst into tears.

Jack slowly got closer to her and hugged her. They stood there sobbing on each other’s shoulders.

Jack broke the silence “they might be something of great significance we are looking for, something which keeps us searching?

The Art Of Making a Choice And Existential Guilt

CHOICES

I intend to write about the gift of making a choice. Indeed,  it takes some time and often a lot of courage, and wisdom and freedom - to come to know what one really wants. The choice is made difficult not by the fact that one of the options is an evil or less in perfection but by the beauty and perfection of both. In other words, choice is an art.

Does God Limit My freedom?

BREATHING FREELY UNDER WATER

It can generally be agreed upon that the extent and immensity of human knowledge has surpassed and exceeded the wildest of our expectations.

In Greek mythology, such a state of affairs never went unnoticed and unpunished by the gods. The fate of Pandora, Arachne and Prometheus are clear examples of the deities’ propensity to limit human creativity and knowledge within ‘safe’ boundaries. Indeed, all mythology is loaded with allegory. One mortal who underwent punishment for her intelligence and creativity is Arachne. Arachne, a weaver who challenged the goddess of wisdom and crafts, Athena to a weaving contest. Arachne’s work was far more beautiful.

Athena out of fury and frustration ripped Arachne's work into pieces, and hit her

“The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost (1874-1963)

Road not taken....

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Caged Bird by Maya Angelou

The Caged Bird Sings of Freedom

The free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wings
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with fearful trill
of the things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom

Traveller, There Is No Path : Antonio Machado

The path is made by walking.

Everything passes on and everything remains,
But our lot is to pass on,
To go on making paths,
Paths across the sea.

I never sought glory,
Nor to leave my song
In the memory of man;
I love those subtle worlds,
Weightless and graceful,
As bubbles of soap.

A Loving God in an Imperfect World

THE PROBLEM OF EVIL

The human and anthropological problem of suffering and agony is the most unpalatable of the existential challenges that man must face and contend with. The question of the death of young and innocent children, the incurable and painful disease of cancer, termination of pregnancies, uncontrollable volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and the sudden death of a close friend or a beloved family member.

In situations like these, human beings do nothing but ask “why”? In fact, the question ends up in a theological sphere of deep emotion or rational speculation. The question inevitably ends up being a question that puts God on trial; Why would an all-loving, all powerful and all-knowing God permit or even enable this to take place.

How to develop a Courageous Character

Courage

In order to live happily and be successful, one must learn which values and traits to hold and how to achieve them. This also demands developing a consistent personality and character. Courage is the ability to conquer the chronic desire to limit options and to live life within safe bounds.

After 24 years of experience as a human being and three years of studying philosophy, one thing I have noted is the essential and fundamental need for

FUEL YOUR PASSION FOR LIFE

         THE PASSIONATE DREAMER

I have been privileged in the last 4 years to have had opportunities to visit a number of African countries; Zimbabwe, Namibia, Kenya and Tanzania (where I have been for almost three years now). In all these countries I have met and interacted with multitudes of young people. The spectacle which has captivated my attention more than any thing else is the passionate and enthusiastic youth; one who is ready to conquer the world! Fortunately, or unfortunately, I have also met the dreary ones. Henceforth, this blog will strive to set ablaze a spark in each heart. It is my hope that the passionless and the dreamless will dream again!

You are my morning and Evening Star

Poem By Francis Chanda (2018)

You are my morning and evening star
My beautiful love
The flower that bloomed in my heart
It neither longs for water nor light
but your smile
Life wants you to be my
past… but my heart, my future
You are the ink of my mind,
The drum of my heart beat and
simply the voice that took
my heart away. The perfect word I
spell better is you.
Like the sun never leave the day…
I will be with you.
Like a diamond ring, you hold
my heart and like numbers, I
count on you.
